Cat Dancer

"17 year old Bianca Passarge of Hamburg dresses up as a cat, complete with furry tail and dances on wine bottles, June 1958. Her performance was based on a dream and she practiced for eight hours every day in order to perfect her dance."

Baby Picture

Photographing babies is not really my thing - I prefer furry creatures - but I do like this little chap.

Opwinterdag

This banner with two of my pix is advertising the 'Opwinterdag', when the plants around my building get their six-monthly spit and polish.

Under Threat

This late-1920s gem is languishing in a former department store that now serves as a complex of artists' studios.

The word is that this elegant lady and her two female companions are due to disappear forever under a fresh coat of paint.

They said: "We come from the future."
Who am I to disagree?

Snozz the Bear Hits the Big Time

My Aussie cousin Yvonne made Snozz for my birthday, which we celebrated in Paris. I originally took this picture to thank her but I also entered it for The Times' Wandering Bears website competition for cute cuddlies in distant places, where it's been published.

Fashion Palaces at the Amsterdam Historical Museum

Nice exhibition, mainly worth visiting for the extraordinary interviews with ancient fashionistas van eigen bodem.

Loitering at the Speakeasy

Spent Thursday evening at the Speakeasy, a monthly literary gathering organised by the very wonderful Words in Here at the English Bookshop. Great craic with Laura, Karen and Megan; Kai is back from Verweggistan; Robert is about to embark on a PhD somewhere in the States.

In a quiet moment, I glanced over my shoulder and espied my translation of Aletta Jacobs’ Herinneringen, resplendent on the central display area. Jacobs was Holland’s equivalent to Emmeline Pankhurst and Susan B. Anthony, and a Thoroughly Good Thing. As this edition was originally brought out more than ten years ago, I am quite delighted to see that it’s still in print!

Elegantly Transcendent

Over the past few weeks, Flavio Pons - who is one of the most stylish individuals ever to grace the face of this planet - has been showing his 'Lichtheid' (Lightness) installation at Amsterdam's Urban Dew project space.

I was there to take some pix, stepping carefully between dozens of yellow origami butterflies that crowded the floors and the walls. The centre piece was an elongated vase with a waterfall of exquisite paper tulips.
