Bullfinch's Mythology (1855) describes the Valkyries as "warlike virgins, mounted upon horses and armed with helmets and spears. (...) When they ride forth on their errand, their armour sheds a strange flickering light, which flashes up over the northern skies, making what men call the "aurora borealis", or "Northern Lights".

You know, I didn't know that about the Valkyries myth. I did live in Alaska for a few years and experienced the surreal coolness of the aurora on a regular basis. It almost moved me to make up myths, too. Interesting post and fab photo.
Thanks for recent encouragement on my "memoir-y" post. I appreciate that! I think I'll do more of them.
